“Education is a once in a lifetime opportunity to open children’s hearts and minds to the unbelievable wonder of the universe”

Message from the Head Teacher

Thank you for taking the time to read this first Parent Bulletin of the summer term. We are at the time of year where assessments and examinations start to dominate life in school. Year 12 have recently completed their first formal assessments for their post-16 courses and Year 10 are about to complete theirs. We then enter the May/June public examinations period, and of course we wish all in Years 11 and 13 the best best of luck with these. They all looked amazing for their Leavers’ photographs on Thursday.  This can be a time where the pressure is building and so it was nice to do something all together for a short while in the sunshine.

In assemblies this week I was delighted to attend and award certificates at our Achievement Assemblies for Years 11-13. I have also had the pleasure of interviewing six candidates from Year 12 to become Head Prefect. Congratulations to Jasmine Hooles and Jasveer Thind who succeeded in achieving this prestigious role. The Senior Prefect team they will lead will also consist of Deputy Head Prefects (Chloe Ancaja, Tayiba Choudhury, Ruby Clare and Aidan Coles). Candidates each presented their idea for a legacy project to the interview panel consisting of the Head Teacher, Deputy Head Teacher, Assistant Head Teacher, Head of Sixth Form and their Achievement Coordinator). We were very impressed by their ideas and by their their responses to our challenging questions. Whilst only two could be selected for Head Prefect, they have all taken a big step forward with their leadership skills and we are sure the whole team will have a really positive impact over the year ahead. Our thanks also to Niamh Christie, Toby Witherspoon and the rest of the outgoing Year 13 team for their dedication over the past year.

As promised before Easter we are now able to share what the future Darrick Wood uniform will look like. We listened carefully to feedback from parents, students and staff and I think the new look does what we set out to achieve. The gold reflects the fact we have always had honey gold shirts/blouses. The black replaces the brown. We continue to proudly display our logo and motto. Finally, the new uniform will match well with our PE kit. For PE kit, students will all have to wear the t-shirt with logo and then have a choice of shorts with logo or leggings with logo. For more details see the link to the policy provided below.

For clarity, only new Year 7 students must wear this uniform from September 2026. Current Years 7-10 (Years 8-11 in September) may do so if they wish from September also. The old uniform may be worn whilst it fits, or whilst stocks last (in the shops or second hand from PSFA). If supplies of particular items or sizes run low, speak to the School. If the item required cannot be found, the option will be there to buy the new uniform, or replace say the brown trousers with black trousers.

Our uniform shops have made their orders and we will let you know when the new uniform items are available. New Year 7 students will be prioritised. The uniform policy has been updated accordingly and can be found on our website here. Our website itself is being re-designed to incorporate the new colours and as a result of feedback. We are just entering the final testing period and updating photos. Hopefully we will be in a position to launch it very soon.

You may have noticed that we have an unprecedented number of teams reaching football finals this year and have played more games than ever. I am so proud of all those who have taken part and extend my best wishes to all who are playing in cup finals.

Finally from me, you will see within this bulletin a reminder of what items of equipment students should have with them daily in their school bags. Please ensure your child has all the items so they are set up well for success at school.

Attendance Focus

93%

As a school we encourage every pupil to aim for the highest possible level of attendance and are delighted that so many are able to achieve this.  Attendance below 90% is classed as persistent absence and equates to one day of missed learning every fortnight.  The NHS publishes guidance to support parents and carers when making school attendance decisions – please see the link below.

Is my child too ill for school? – NHS

If there are any issues affecting your child’s attendance, please contact their pastoral team in the first instance.  We appreciate your support and look forward to working with pupils and families to maintain and increase excellent attendance and outcomes at Darrick Wood School.

Updates and Reminders

Equipment and Ready to Learn

It is important to arrive at School ready to learn and this entails ensuring that pupils have the relevant equipment to hand. Pupils will need a large plain dark school bag which can hold two A4 folders.  It must be able to close e.g. with a zip.  Handbags or sports bags are not suitable. PE Kit should be carried in a separate bag.

Each day pupils should bring with them the following items:

  • A pencil case containing:
  • Pens and pencils.  Pupils need blue, black, red and purple pens.

Red pens are used for response to feedback and purple pens are used for peer feedback

  • Sharpener, rubber, ruler
  • Coloured pencils, glue stick, scissors (optional but useful).

Also required are:

  • A reading book
  • A re-usable water bottle which they can re-fill from our dispensers
  • Contact book
  • A scientific calculator
  • Lab coat / PE Kit (as appropriate for the timetable)
  • Locker key
  • ID badge on school provided lanyard (worn at all times around the School).
  • Exercise books and text books as provided for the day’s lessons according to the timetable

Please note – correction fluid (e.g. Tipp-Ex) is not permitted in school.

Message from Student Reception

As the warmer weather approaches and hay fever season begins, we would like to ask for your support in helping students stay comfortable and prepared during the school day.

We have seen an increase in students visiting the medical room during lesson time to request cups of water or antihistamines. While we are always happy to support students who are unwell, our supplies are limited and are intended for those who require immediate treatment.

To help us manage this, we kindly ask that students bring a refillable water bottle to school each day. This is an item they should have already as it is on the equipment list.

If your child requires antihistamines or any other medication during the day, these can be handed in at student reception, where they will be stored securely in the medical cupboard. Students can then access their medication at break or lunchtime as needed.
Thank you for your continued support.”

Timings Change

From Tuesday, 5th May 2026 due to the Public Examinations starting, there will be a slight change to some of the timings of the school day.  Lunch will be at the earlier time of 12.15pm which is after Lesson 3. all other times of the day will remain the same.

Highlights

Year 12 Etching and Life Drawing Workshop at Eltham College

Our Year 12 artists took part in two more Art Workshops at Eltham College on Friday, 6th and Friday, 20th March, where they developed their etching and life drawing skills. Two Year 13 Textile students joined the Life Drawing Workshop, as it was useful for their projects.  Everyone produced some amazing prints and drawings, which will help make their portfolios even stronger.  The students also had a great opportunity to see the Putting Away Childish Things Exhibition at The Gerald Moore Gallery, which showcased childhood objects from the 1920s to the 1970s, from the collection of the Museum of Everyday Life.

The Art Department would like to extend its thanks to Eltham College and The Gerald Moore Gallery for hosting three inspiring workshops for our Sixth Form artists.  We look forward to working with Eltham College next year.

On Wednesday lunchtime, prior to the Easter break, students from BFF (Bible, Food and Faith) organised an Easter event in the Main Hall. The event welcomed students from across all year groups, with the provision of complimentary refreshments, including cakes, crisps, fruit and brioche. The inclusive and welcoming atmosphere encouraged students to socialise and engage with one another beyond their usual year groups.

Alongside the refreshments, a range of activities were available. Students were able to take part in craft activities, such as making friendship bracelets, Easter decorations and cards. In addition, a number of structured games, including egg and spoon races and a Bible trivia quiz were offered and enjoyed by many, contributing to the positive and lively nature of the event.  Easter eggs were provided to the winners.

The Easter event provided a valuable opportunity to mark the season while fostering a sense of community within the School.

Bible study, Food and Faith continues this term in SC3 on Tuesday Lunchtimes from 1.15pm – all are welcome.

Ski Trip 2026

Over Easter the annual Ski Trip to Austria was a huge success. This year we visited Flachau again and for the first time in a long time we had snow! The ski conditions this year on the mountain were incredible and this allowed for huge amounts of skiing progress amongst a large group of beginners. We also had a big snowball fight! Girls won……. The students soaked up the Austrian culture, the Alps atmosphere and each others’ company. A huge thank-you from staff to students for making the trip such a success.

An Evening with Rory Sutherland

We were delighted to welcome Behavioural Science and Marketing guru Rory Sutherland to Darrick Wood on Monday evening. Rory spoke to Business and Economics students (and a few staff and other fans) about the importance of perception in marketing, along with how re-framing questions can find unexpected solutions to problems.

Following Rory’s presentation, he was happy to engage in a Q&A with Mr Hammond, addressing issues from the impact of remote working on tomorrow’s workforce and how behavioural science might be used to revolutionise Darrick Wood School. We are very grateful to such a high profile guest for being so generous in giving up his time and sharing his unique perspective and delivery style.

At the end of last term we took 10 students from our Student Leadership Council to the Bromley Youth Manifesto Event at The Warren. During the day the students were able to complete various workshops with students from other Bromley schools who are part of their School Councils. They were also able to ask questions to local Police and other Bromley services about keeping the Youth safe and supported. One issue that will be brought forward and worked with by all involved was about the mental health of students. Thank you to Lizzie, Scarlett, Mojola, Riley, Arthur, Zara, Wesley, Megan, Phoebe and Anita for representing the School so well and sharing so many fantastic ideas. Thank you to Mrs Iddiols-Bunclark and Mrs Bothick for supporting the students throughout the day.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Next week we will be marking Culture Week at Darrick Wood School, celebrating equality, diversity and inclusion across our school community.

Students will take part in a dedicated assembly focusing on cultural diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion, with particular emphasis on the wide range of cultures represented within our school population. This will be complemented by Culture Week activities during Form Time, providing further opportunities for discussion, reflection and learning.

Throughout the week, PSHE lessons will focus on multiculturalism, equality, diversity and inclusion, helping students to explore these important themes in an appropriate and meaningful way. There will also be additional activities and events taking place across the week to enrich students’ understanding and experience.

Unfortunately, we are not able to host a cultural dress day during Culture Week itself. We are planning to hold one later in the academic year, however, to continue our celebration of culture and diversity at Darrick Wood School.

We are looking forward to an inspiring and interesting week that celebrates the diversity within our school community and the wider communities to which we all belong.

Sports and PE News

U19 Boys become Kent League Champions!

After a long hard-fought season (and an even harder fought last game of the season), the U19 Boys 1Xi won the North Kent Division 1 this year. This is the first 6th form league victory the school have achieved in over ten years. The students involved turned up every week and were in fact unbeaten all season. Prior to the last game of the season, the 1Xi had been top of the table for a long time and only needed to draw with 2nd place St Gregs to win the league……and we drew 1-1. It was not a pleasant game for Mr Simpson’s heart rate. Huge congratulations to the team and a huge thank-you in particular to the Year 13 leavers that have contributed huge amounts to Darrick Wood Football over the last 7 years. Huge congratulations to (Back row left to right) Thomas R, Harry P, Temidayo A, Jordan D, Lucas B, Charlie H (Capt). Front row (Left to right) Frankie C,  Joe M, Joe D, Aydan F (GK), George H, Luke S, Aaron M.

U14 girls win the Bromley Cup!

The U14 girls beat Newstead Wood 4-0 in the Bromley Cup Final last week. Playing at Bromley FC the girls played incredibly well and thoroughly deserved their victory. Issy P and Jess R were MOM on the day. We are hoping this team go onto Kent Cup success next year.

The main football season finished at Easter. Overall, this season we played 120 games which is 5 more than the previous season. Huge well done to all players for their efforts and a huge thank-you to parents/carers for their support of extra-curricular sport. We finish the season with 5 Bromley Cup finals. We have already played 2. U14 girls won 4-0 and unfortunately the U12 girls lost 1-3 to Bonus Pastor. Remaining games:

  • U16 Girls vs Langley Park (Friday 24th April) @Beckenham FC
  • U13 Girls vs Bullers Wood (Thursday 30th April @Bromley FC
  • U12 Boys vs Ravens Wood (Friday 1st May) @Bromley FC

We now turn our attention to summer sports. The Summer XC timetable will be available on the website. Students should try to get involved in a summer sport and try something new!

Student Leadership

Main Assembly

This week in assembly we had Megan and Zara talking about the role of the Eco Reps in school and what changes and differences they have made.  They were really engaging and gave a great reflection of all the hard work that has been going on behind the scenes.  Thank you to Mrs Harrison for working with the students on this.

Main Assembly

During last weeks assembly we were treated by a fantastic piece of music from the Brass Band consisting of Matty, Isabella, Adam, Alex and Vincent.  Thank you to them and Mr Rees for organising this for us and well done on such a great performance.
