“Education is not the learning of facts, it’s rather the training of the mind to think”
– Albert Einstein –
Welcome to our second Parent Bulletin this year. We are in a busy period where we work hard to set our expectations and deliver the best lessons and extra-curricular programme we can, but are also pleased to be able to welcome parents of specific year groups to the School for information evenings. So far we have held evenings for parents of students who have just joined the Sixth Form and then last week we were delighted to see a large number of parents of our youngest students come in to find out more about what we do and how they can help during this critical transition period from primary into secondary education. This week it was the turn of parents of Year 11 to come to the School. Apart from being able to speak to subject representatives, SEN and careers, there was also lots to think about in terms of how the year for these students is structured, especially the key dates of mock examinations. Probably one of the most helpful presentations was one providing techniques for studying and revision alongside the importance of staying physically and mentally healthy in what can be a very stressful year for all – students, parents and teachers!
I will leave you to read the rest of this Bulletin and catch up on the latest news from around the School, but I would like to end with a few gentle policy reminders:
1. Please ensure you have read my recent email regarding attendance and punctuality. You will see in this Bulletin that our overall attendance figure has already decreased from 96% to 95% since the last Parent Bulletin. We need to work together to ensure this reverts to our target of 96% very quickly.
2. Our Communications Policy includes an important paragraph regarding one of our Core Values – Respect. I would like to remind everyone of the importance of adhering to this:
All parties are expected to value and show respect for others by demonstrating acceptable standards of attitude, behaviour and communication. Whilst we acknowledge that in some circumstances parents/carers may be upset or angry at a particular situation, we will not tolerate shouting or unreasonable behaviour, including any form of bullying, harassment or intimidation. If proven, this could result in further action being taken. Both staff and parents are responsible for creating a respectful environment that encourages effective communication. This will mean that all those involved in communication will treat each other with dignity, courtesy and sensitivity. This includes all staff that you communicate with at the School, including office and teaching staff.
Parents who need to meet with members of staff are reminded that they must have an appointment. Our staff have very busy roles throughout the School day and into the evenings. Whilst we always want to try to help, staff are not usually available without considerable notice.
3. Please remember that in accordance with Department for Education guidance and our own Behaviour Policy, students can be kept behind at school at the end of the day for a detention for up to 30 minutes without any notice to parents. All detentions are, however, entered into our system and parents can track this using the Bromcom MyChildatSchool app. Parents will always be given 24 hours’ notice of Detentions longer than 30 minutes, again using the app.
Finally, on a more positive note, I have been very impressed with the vast majority of our students during these first crucial weeks of the new school year. To give you some idea, we have issued over 32,000 positive points across the School already! 94% of all the points awarded are positive. I look forward to awarding Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Awards later this year.

Jeans for Genes
On Friday, 20th September the School celebrated Jeans for Genes day. Staff and students swapped a piece of uniform/clothing for denim to show their support for this fantastic charity. It was lovely to see so many involved and we thank you for your donations for this. We have currently raised £695 from this, but it is still open if you wish to contribute via ParentPay. Please look out for the next charity events coming up and how you can support them.
Year 8 Team Building
Year 8 embarked on a Team Building Event on Tuesday, 17th September. It was wonderful to witness the students working together and embracing the fun physical challenges, competing for the coveted medals. Students were encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and completed various challenges on the inflatables course. The mild, sunny weather ensured that conditions were ideal for the fun-packed day. Our thanks go to all the Tutors and other members of staff who cheered (and joined in), enabling the students to experience this event.
Bookbuzz 2024
As a school that keenly promotes reading, Darrick Wood is delighted to participate again this year in the BookBuzz campaign run by the BookTrust. Our very excited Year 7 students recently selected a free book from the Trust’s list and are eagerly awaiting their arrival later in the Autumn term.
Research shows that children who read have better mental wellbeing and self-esteem, are more empathetic and more creative, and do better in school.
Year 12 Biology students carried out their first required practical this year. This involved biochemical tests for reducing sugars and non-reducing sugars to successfully identify a glucose and sucrose solution from four unknown solutions. Well done to all students for carrying out their investigation in such a careful and methodical way!
At Darrick Wood School, we are deeply committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion for all. As part of this, we wanted to take this opportunity to remind our entire school community of what we believe in.
National Inclusion Week (NIW) is a special week dedicated to celebrating inclusion and taking action to create inclusive environments. This year, it takes place from 23rd to 29th September.
The theme for National Inclusion Week 2024 is ‘Impact Matters.’ This is a call-to-action to everyone in our school community – students, staff, parents and carers – to reflect on the positive impact we can make through our actions and choices.
Each one of us has the power to create a school community where everyone feels seen, valued, and included.
‘Impact Matters’ encourages us to understand, identify, and measure how we support marginalised groups, and to take meaningful steps toward lasting, positive change in our school.
National Inclusion Week has been embraced by thousands of organisations, reaching millions of people, and we’re excited to make 2024 our most impactful year yet. We invite you to focus on this with us all, although at Darrick Wood School we recognise that every day is one of inclusion, and take this opportunity to raise awareness of our commitment towards equality, diversity and inclusion.

PE and Sport clubs have now been running for two weeks. Attendance at these clubs have been superb and students’ organisation and efforts have been well received. We have also completed all trials for sports teams! The PE Department are really looking forward to seeing what our young students can achieve this year when we compete in a range of leagues and cups against local opposition. We will of course hold re-trials later in the year, whilst also keeping a close eye on lessons to see if any students have been missed or progress their skills and fitness.
One club in particular that we would like to recruit more students for is Girls Rugby. Girls Rugby is a new club this year taking place every Wednesday after school. We have an external coach from Beckenham RFC running the club and it will run alongside the Boys club. It is non-contact Rugby, so please don’t be shy. Girls Rugby is a huge sport rising in popularity every year. It may well be a good option for girls who want to play a competitive invasion game but are not strong at Football.
Football Results in last two weeks:
1Xi beat St Olaves 6-2 in the North Kent Division 1
2Xi lost to Beths in 1-3 in the North Kent Division 2

U14 Girls beat Townley Grammar 7-1 in the 1st round of the Kent Cup
U14 boys beat Greenwich 6-1 in the 1st round of the Kent Cup
U13 boys unfortunately have crashed out of both the English Schools cup and Kent Cup, but now have the Bromley League to win.
U12, 13 & 15 girls have their Kent Cup and National cup games in the next two weeks!
U13 Girls beat Haberdashers Hatcham 10-0 in RD1 of the National cup yesterday

This week’s PSHE leaflets are on ‘TikTok’ and ‘Final Fantasy’ Please read through them and discuss them at home. We hope you find them useful.
Bromley Y run a range of free webinars for parents.
You can find the full schedule here, but we would specifically like to recommend the following webinar to those of you who find their child sometimes struggles to attend school due to emotional difficulties:
The Student Leadership Council met this week to start making plans on the changes they feel would benefit the School this year. The SLC is made up of all year groups, and students have to apply to be involved. We have 36 members so far from Years 8-13. Year 7 will be invited to apply towards the end of this term. This is a key role within the School and is very important for developing the Life Learning Skills we pride ourselves on. At the end of last year the SLC created a poster to be displayed in the Dining Halls to remind students of the rules and expectations at Break and Lunch times (see picture). We thank them for their hard work and look forward to seeing the impact of this in the coming weeks.
Last week in Main School assembly we were treated to Daniel in Year 11 proving what a talent he has by performing a guitar piece he had previously played at last year’s Summer Concert. He was supported by Zach, Chuks and Guillermo. It was a lovely way to start our assembly and we thank them for their ongoing contribution to the Music Department.
This week, Aimee, Anastasia and Ria talked about the importance of being kind to each other and what they had learnt from attending Kindness Club last year. This was a club that looked at friendships and helping each other and we were privileged to hear the girls speak about how the club has helped them in school. We thank them and Miss Cowburn for their work on this.
Form Groups have been busy nominating members to become their Form, Charity and Eco reps this week. All Forms now have two members for each area and we look forward to seeing how they use their leadership skills to make a difference to the School. Badges will be awarded in Year Group Assemblies in the next week. Congratulations to all of our students who have taken on these challenges.
