At Darrick Wood School, we believe that academic excellence is just one part of a holistic, well-rounded education. In addition to developing knowledge and skills in traditional academic subjects, we also place a strong emphasis on helping our students develop essential life skills through our Life Learning Skills programme.

Our Life Learning Skills programme consists of nine key skills that we believe are essential for success in both academic and non-academic contexts

  • Resilience
  • Being able to persevere through setbacks. You are able to take on challenges and accept learning mistakes to reach a goal.
  • Communication
  • To share your ideas clearly and effectively. You will be able to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Initiative
  • To have the ability to assess and initiate things independently.
  • Thinker
  • To think critically about your own learning. you will be able to identify what you know and what you do not know about your own learning, and what you would like to know moving forward.
  • Inquirer
  • To think more closely about a problem or challenge. You will be able to develop patterns or solutions to discover how to solve challenges.
  • Open Minded
  • Being open-minded means welcoming new ideas. You will listen to debates and information that you typically do not know about or maybe agree with.
  • Empathy
  • To have the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
  • Risk Taker
  • A culture where you feel safe to experiment. You will be able to try again and again.
  • Reflective
  • Being able to start learning something new and ask yourself how well you're learning the new information. You will be able to identify whether there are any gaps in your knowledge, and which learning strategies you enjoy using the most.

We believe that these skills are essential for success both in and out of the classroom. By developing these skills, our students are better equipped to succeed academically, to navigate the complexities of the modern world, and to build fulfilling and successful lives.

At Darrick Wood School, we embed our Life Learning Skills into every aspect of school life, from our curriculum to our extracurricular activities. Our staff help students develop these skills in a variety of ways, including through project-based learning, group work, and reflective practice.

We believe that our Life Learning Skills programme is an essential part of a well-rounded education. By developing these skills, our students are better equipped to succeed academically and to build fulfilling and successful lives.
