MAthematics

“Mathematics has beauty and romance. It’s not a boring place to be, the mathematical world. It’s an extraordinary place; it’s worth spending time there”

-Marcus du Sautoy, British mathematician-

Subject Vision and Intent

At Darrick Wood School, we believe that every child is unique and has a different learning pace and style. That’s why we have designed our Maths curriculum in such a way that it varies by the current level of understanding for each year group and set.  As a result, the curriculum map you see here is just an example.

Mathematics is a fundamental subject that plays a crucial role in our daily lives. From simple calculations to complex problem-solving, Maths is an essential tool that helps us understand the world around us. Our Maths curriculum is designed to cater to the diverse needs of our students and provide them with the knowledge and skills they need to excel in Maths and beyond.

In each year group and set, our Maths curriculum is tailored to meet the individual needs of our students. We understand that some students may be advanced in Maths, while others may need extra support to grasp the foundation concepts. Our teachers identify the learning pace and style of each student and use this information to create a personalised Maths curriculum for them.  The Maths curriculum for each year group and set is designed to build upon the knowledge and skills gained in the previous year. For example, in Year 7, some students are introduced to the basics of Maths such as counting, shapes and measurement, but in other Year 7 sets the students move on to more complex concepts such as multiplication, division and algebra, for example.

Our Maths curriculum varies by the current level of understanding for each year group and set, as we believe that this is the most effective way to provide our students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in Maths and beyond. Our curriculum is designed to cater to the individual needs of our students and ensure that they are fully prepared for the next stage of their academic journey.
