Reading Realm

The Reading Realm is our wonderful school library. Open from 8am to 4pm the Reading Realm is a popular space for quiet reading, book chat, making friends, doing homework, and revising for exams. Students enjoy visiting the Reading Realm before and after school, with clubs like Doodle club and the Carnegie Shadowing Group meet up, and at break and lunch when they can relax with a good book or get some work done.

With a huge collection of around 15,000 fiction and non-fiction books to choose from, every student will find something to borrow. Loan periods are 1 week, or 2 weeks and most students can borrow up to 3 books at a time. This year we have also invested in an additional collection of nearly 5,000 e-books and audiobooks on Sora which students can access anywhere, anytime!

Carnegie Shadowing Group (annual March-June)

Run by Miss Jacobs and Mrs Heather, the group meets in the Reading Realm or computer room to discuss and review books on the Carnegie medal shortlist.

More info on the ‘shadowing group’ from the Carnegie website:

Every spring, Yoto Carnegies invites reading groups in libraries, schools, homes…in fact, anywhere there are children and young people and books, to get involved with shadowing. The young people taking part are known as ‘shadowers’ as they ‘shadow’ the judging process for the Yoto Carnegie Medals; they read, discuss and review the books on each shortlist, engage in reading related activity which they can share online, and vote for their favourites to win the Shadowers’ Choice Awards.

World Book Day

World Book Day is a charity event that started in 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading.

Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income.

On World Book Day, we organise reading activities and celebrations to cultivate a healthy, positive reading culture at school that promotes reading for pleasure.

We will next be celebrating World Book Day on 7 March 2024.

Websites

  • Access IT is our Library website which contains a catalogue of the physical books in the Reading Realm. Students can log in using school email and password to see what they’ve borrowed, when their books are due back, request books, write reviews, and make lists. When they search for books, they’ll see genres, keywords and a short summary of what the book is about.
  • Sora is our e-books and audiobooks platform (it has a separate catalogue to Access IT). Similar to Access IT, students can log in using school email and password and can search for books by genre, cover, or keywords. Users can also earn badges as they read (see screenshot below). Also see poster attached.
