In the first half term students have a range of different workshops to build their art skills in a variety of media and experimenting with a variety of techniques to help them when they start component 1 The workshops range from: Observational drawing using different types of paper and media Using the dark room to create photograms Monoprinting Cardboard sculptures Wire sculptures How to analyse the work of an artist Clay sculptures	Students start their non-examination assessment Each student chooses their own theme for their personal project They create a mind map of ideas and then an artist visual mind map to help them develop their idea he students work through a 6-week cycle, which includes: Week 1 Observations. Week 2 Artists. Week 3 Composition Ideas. Week 4 Development of idea. Week 5 and 6 Large scale piece Students learn how to progress through the assessment criteria set by the examination board including: Develop and explore ideas, Work from direct observation, Research past and present Artists, Designers and Craftspeople, Experimentation of materials and processes, Progression and review of ideas Final piece(s), All work must be based on observational drawing and link to the work of other artists Students are taught to experiment with a variety of media These include pencil, pen, paint, collage, tape, sculpture and printing They are also encouraged to use different types of paper and fabrics Students specialise in their material strengths as they progress through the course The students work through a 6-week cycle, which includes: Week 1 Observations, Week 2 Artists, Week 3 Composition Ideas, Week 4 Development of idea, Week 5 and 6 Large scale piece	Continuation of the 6-week cycle: Week 1 Observations, Week 2 Artists, Week 3 Composition Ideas, Week 4 Development of idea, Week 5 and 6 Large scale piece	Continuation of the 6-week cycle: Week 1 Observations, Week 2 Artists, Week 3 Composition Ideas, Week 4 Development of idea, Week 5 and 6 Large scale piece
