Eco-Schools green flag Award

In May 2024 , Darrick Wood School successfully achieved the Eco Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction. The Award involved establishing an Eco Committee made up of representatives from each year group across the school. In September 2023 we completed a school audit and based on the results obtained, lead us to focusing on three areas of development within the school. These were; School Grounds, Litter and Biodiversity.

The Eco Committee have met every half term and have had a leading role in each area of development.

The outcomes achieved this year;

School grounds – significant investment has allowed for metal sports storage containers to be erected on the Y7,8,9 and 10 playgrounds. Additional sports equipment including Basketball hoops and equipment for student led free play has been embedded into every day practice. There have been new picnic areas developed and seating has been rearranged to improve socialising opportunities.

Litter – 35 litter pickers were purchased and students and staff have been actively engaged in litter picking across the school site on a daily basis.

Biodiversity – we have established  and embedded a Year 9 Gardening club which meet weekly. They have built a number of bug hotels around the school site and have developed a school pond.

We will continue to work on these areas and to secure the award for 2025!
