combined Science - ks4

“Science is more than a body of knowledge; it’s a way of thinking, a way of sceptically interrogating the universe”

– Carl Sagan –

Subject Vision and Intent

The Key Stage 4 science curriculum is designed to build on the key skills and concepts pupils developed in Key Stage 3. Throughout the two year GCSE course, practical work is taught alongside the theory and pupils are taught how to not only think scientifically but also how to work scientifically.  Pupils will develop a critical understanding of how science is used in the world around them.

At Darrick Wood we recognise the individual needs of our pupils.  Therefore, pupils are placed into sets appropriate to meet their learning requirements and ability so their science teachers can tailor lessons to ensure the progress of all pupils within the class.

At Key Stage 4 pupils have five hours of science on their timetable and we operate a rota system whereby one lesson will be Biology, the next lesson Chemistry, then Physics back to Biology and so on.  We try wherever possible to ensure the pupils are taught by subject specialists and currently we follow AQA Combined Science Trilogy specification for the double award and the separate scientists follow AQA’s Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses
