Richmal Crompton Lamburn (1890-1969)

She was the authoress of the world-famous ‘Just William’ books; 38 books of stories about the freckle-faced rascal William Brown were published. William originated in a small magazine – Home magazine – in 1919 and by 1977 nine million Just William books had been sold and translated into 13 languages.

Richmal was born in Bury, Lancashire the second of three children. She attended Royal Holloway College London and supported the women’s suffrage movement. In 1917 Richmal became Senior Classics mistress at Bromley High School where she taught until 1924 when she contracted polio. She had to give up teaching and she was able to concentrate on her writing. 

Most of her adult life was spent in Bromley; 36 years living at a house she had built on Oakley Road and 15 years at Beechworth, Orpington Road, Chislehurst. Richmal died on 11th January 1969 at Farnborough.
